Hiragana and Katakana are syllabary alphabets. This means everything is written in syllables.

　　　　　　　　　Ｈｉｒａｇａｎａ　ひらがな　- is used in japanese words

Ｆｏｒ　ｅｘａｍｐｌｅ：　The word kimono must be broken down into syllables before written in Hiragana.

　　　　　　　　　　　　　ki ・ mo ・ no 　　The Hiragana characters for these (respectfully) is: 　　

　　　　　　　　　　　　　き・も・の　thus: きもの

Ｏｎｅ　ｍｏｒｅ：　　　　The word sakana (fish) must be broken down into it's syllables.

　　　　　　　　　　　　　sa ･ ka ･ na　　　The Hiragana characters for these (respectfully) is:　　

　　　　　　　　　　　さ・か・な　thus: さかな

　　　　　　　　　　　　　Ｋａｔａｋａｎａ　カタカナ　- is used for foreign words

Ｆｏｒ　ｅｘａｍｐｌｅ：　The word cake must be broken down into it's syllables, but wait!

　　　　　　　　　　　　　So cake is spelled ケーキ(ke-ki). See, easy as pie!
